Newlands Church

In May 1826 William Wordsworth and his daughter left Rydal Mount on a walking tour of the local fells.

As they ambled along the Newlands Valley, the poet was impressed by the appearance of the tiny church through a veil of half-opened leaves. This experience prompted a stanza in his poem " To May " , which begins:

How delicate the leafy veil;
Through which yon house of God;
Gleams mis the peace of this deep dale;
By few but shepherds trod;
