Loweswater Church

This is a single chamber church, with a bellcote at the west end, together with an apse and tiny transepts at the east end. As a building, it is neither more nor less attractive than many similar churches but its location is breathtaking. Records of St Bees Priory include reference to a place of worship at Loweswater in 1125. The origins of the present building date back to 1829 when a new church was consecrated. This in turn was restored and enlarged in 1884.

The rebuild of 1884 was made in anticipation of an increase in the population brought about by a proposed lead mining venture. As we can see, the church was rebuilt, but the lead mine did not live up to expectations.

Initially, there is a a nave with exposed beams leading to the chancel in the apse. Overall, there is a feeling of simplicity. This is probably underlined by the absence of stained glass, apart from the attractive red borders around the windows. The plain glass of the east window gives a view of the fells beyond.
