We were hoping to strike it lucky and end up in a sunny area today, but it was a bit like picking lottery numbers to be honest. Plenty to choose from, but not much chance of getting the right one. And with an uncertain forecast for sunny spells, with showers or longer spells of rain, it's no wonder we couldn't make our minds up where to walk. In the end there were certainly plenty of sunny spells which we managed to share and thankfully the rain never turned up at all.

The first half of the walk was done along this lovely country lane which runs between Scales and Mungrisdale. For anyone who wanted an enjoyable walk without the effort involved in ascending the fells, a walk along this road would definitely leave you feeling satisfied.

Just before reaching Mungrisdale we left the road and began our ascent of of Souther Fell.
Mmmm, hat, gloves and coat in the middle of May. I'm sure it should be a lot warmer than this.
